I don't buy car magazines these days. Or any magazines. I continue to be a MASC member and get Mascot. Each issue is well put together and typically has a couple of technical articles or an owner's story, well written. The rest is composed of area reports and although these are often quite humorous, if you don't participate in any of their meets one has no idea who those mentioned are. They don't ...

It was one of those in that price range that packed in on me after 13 months - some of which was in lockdown so it did not get a lot of use. I refitted the original Lucas which has just developed an intermittent fault.

I have gone for a WOSP in the end. Not too much more than a rebuilt original one but a lot easier to get in place and fit. Very early days but so far so good.....

Another vote for Mascot that comes monthly with the MASC subscription, has the internet killed off or killing off most of the magazines?

Thanks for the responses. I have a couple more queries. What level of backlash is acceptable in the bevels. Are thicker thrust available or do I have to make up shim packs.

    Cheers

It's a long while though my memory was that I didn't disturb anything. It was a 3.9 different if that is relevant. But now mentioned, I do recall doing the 2 roll pin trick that David mentions.

  • Dave O'Neill 217 May 2024

I can confirm that the crownwheel doesnt need to come off, but at least one bearing cap does, as you cant access the pin directly - photo 1.

I think it would be possible to remove the pin with the other cap still in place, but you would struggle to refit it. Photo 2.

It only takes two minutes to remove the caps and lift the diff carrier out. You just need to make sure the caps ...

  • David Billington17 May 2024

I just looked at the 4.22 diff carrier on my bench and the pin is inside the inner diameter of the CW and just next to the edge of a tab washer. IIRC some people use 2 spring pins one inside the other as I think at one time the pins weren't available and were somewhat soft anyway, I had one fail which resulted in a terminally damaged pinion.
